MP3 vs WAV vs WebM: Which Should You Download?

A quick guide to picking the right file for sharing, editing or saving space.

The short answer

Download MP3 if you want to send, share or upload the recording. Download WAV if you’ll edit it. Keep the original WebM/M4A if you want the smallest file and don’t mind that a few older apps can’t open it.

FormatBest forSize (voice, 1 min)
MP3 (128 kbps)Sharing, email, WhatsApp, podcasts, any playerabout 1 MB
WAV (16-bit PCM)Editing in Audacity, GarageBand or a DAWabout 5–6 MB (mono, 44.1–48 kHz)
WebM / M4A (original)Smallest file, exactly as your browser recorded itabout 0.5–1 MB

MP3: plays everywhere

MP3 is lossy: it throws away detail you’re unlikely to hear to make the file much smaller. At 128 kbps, speech sounds clean and a minute is about 1 MB. Every phone, computer, car stereo and messaging app plays it.

WAV: uncompressed, best for editing

WAV stores every sample as recorded (here 16-bit PCM), so nothing is lost when you cut, mix or apply effects and export again. The price is size: around 5 MB per minute in mono, and double that in stereo. Use it for Audacity, GarageBand, Premiere or any DAW, and for audio you’ll process later.

WebM and M4A: the browser’s own recording

Browsers record compressed audio natively: Chrome, Edge and Firefox use WebM (Opus), and Safari uses M4A (AAC). Both sound very good at small sizes. Downloading the original is instant because no conversion is needed, but it’s always the full, untrimmed take, and some older Windows players and editors won’t open WebM.

Which one for…

  • WhatsApp, email, Telegram: MP3
  • Podcast draft or voice-over to edit: WAV
  • Archiving lots of voice notes: the original WebM/M4A, or MP3
  • Transcription services: MP3 or WAV; both are widely accepted

Ready to record? The MP3 voice recorder highlights MP3, and the audio recorder is set up for WAV-friendly music and sound recording.

Frequently asked questions

WAV is lossless, so technically yes. For speech at 128 kbps most people can’t hear a difference, but WAV is safer if you’ll edit and re-export.

Yes. On our recorder you don’t have to: press the MP3 button after recording and the conversion happens in your browser.

Safari’s built-in recorder uses AAC audio in an MP4/M4A container. It plays on all Apple devices and most others.
