Why MP3?

MP3 is the format that plays everywhere: iPhone and Android, Windows and Mac, car stereos, WhatsApp, email, Google Drive and every podcast or video editor. Browsers don’t record in MP3 by themselves. Chrome and Firefox record WebM, and Safari records M4A. This page converts your recording to MP3 inside your browser, so you don’t need a separate converter and nothing gets uploaded.

The MP3 is encoded at 128 kbps, which is plenty for speech and keeps files small, about 1 MB per minute. If you want to edit the recording in Audacity or another audio editor, choose WAV instead to avoid any compression.

Good uses for an MP3 voice recording

  • Voice messages to send by email or chat
  • Voice-overs for videos and presentations
  • Practising a speech, an audition or a language
  • Quick podcast drafts and interview notes
  • Lecture or meeting notes from your own mic

For music or ambient sound, turn off the noise filter and echo cancel chips first. They are tuned for speech and can make music sound thin. The online audio recorder explains the best settings for that.
