Record sound online, not just voice

This audio recorder captures anything your microphone can hear: speech, singing, an instrument, a meeting room, birdsong or a noise you want to show a mechanic. Press Record, allow the mic, and watch the waveform as it records. When you stop, trim the start and end and download the result.

Best settings for music and ambient sound

The three chips under the buttons control your browser’s built-in audio processing:

  • Noise filter (noise suppression) removes steady background noise. Great for speech, but it can also remove quiet notes and room tone.
  • Echo cancel stops speaker sound from feeding back into the mic. Use it on calls, and turn it off for music.
  • Auto gain keeps the volume level. Turn it off for music so loud and soft parts keep their dynamics.

For a natural, raw recording of music or a room, switch all three off before you press Record. Watch the level meter and stay out of the red to avoid distortion.

Save as WAV for editing, MP3 for sharing

WAV is uncompressed 16-bit audio, the best choice if you’ll edit, mix or analyse the sound later. MP3 is small and plays everywhere. The original button gives you the file exactly as your browser recorded it (WebM or M4A), untrimmed.

Choose the right microphone

After you allow the mic once, the list next to the chips shows every input your device has: the built-in mic, a USB microphone, a headset or a webcam. Pick the one closest to the sound you want. An external USB mic usually beats a laptop’s built-in one, because it sits further from the fan and keyboard. If you’re not sure which input works best, record a few seconds with each on the mic test page and compare.

Frequently asked questions

It is the same tool. An audio recorder simply implies any sound, so on this page we suggest turning off the speech filters for music and ambient sound.

If your microphone and browser provide two different channels, the WAV and MP3 keep both. Most built-in and USB mics are mono, and mono files are half the size.

Not with a web page. Browsers can only record microphone input, not sound played by your computer.

Your device’s native rate, usually 44.1 kHz or 48 kHz, shown under the buttons while you record.

No. Recording and conversion stay in your browser and the file is saved straight to your device.

Yes, in Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Samsung Internet. Keep the screen on while recording.
