How to test your microphone

  1. Pick your microphone in the list (it fills in after you allow the mic the first time).
  2. Press Start test and allow microphone access.
  3. Talk normally. The level meter should move into the green and the waveform should rise when you speak.
  4. Press Stop, then Play to hear exactly what other people hear on a call.

Mic not working? Quick checks

  • “Microphone access is blocked”: allow the mic in the browser’s site settings, then reload. Here’s the full guide on how to allow microphone access.
  • No sound but no error: choose another device in the list, and check the mute switch on your headset or the mute key on your laptop.
  • “Could not start”: another app (Zoom, Teams, Discord) may be holding the mic. Close it and try again.
  • Windows or Mac: make sure your browser is allowed under the system’s microphone privacy settings.

Make your mic sound better

Play back your test and listen for three things: echo (add soft furnishings or move away from bare walls), hiss or hum (turn on the noise filter, or move away from fans and chargers) and a thin or distant sound (get closer, about a hand-width to 20 cm from the mic). Our guide to recording clear voice audio has more fixes. Need to keep the test? Download it as WAV or MP3.
