How to Allow Microphone Access in Your Browser

If a site says your microphone is blocked, these steps turn it back on in a minute.

Chrome and Edge (Windows, Mac, Chromebook)

  1. Click the lock / site settings icon to the left of the web address.
  2. Find Microphone and set it to Allow.
  3. Reload the page and press Record again.

If the microphone is missing from that list, open Settings › Privacy and security › Site settings › Microphone and remove the site from “Not allowed to use your microphone”. Also check that the right default device is selected at the top of that page.

Firefox

  1. Click the microphone icon (or the lock) in the address bar.
  2. Click the × next to “Blocked Temporarily” or “Blocked” to clear it.
  3. Reload the page and choose Allow when Firefox asks.

Safari on Mac

  1. Open Safari › Settings › Websites › Microphone.
  2. Set the site to Allow (or “Ask”).
  3. Reload the page.

iPhone and iPad (Safari)

  1. Tap aA in the address bar, then Website Settings.
  2. Set Microphone to Allow or Ask, and reload.
  3. Still blocked? Go to Settings › Apps › Safari › Microphone (on older iOS: Settings › Safari › Microphone) and choose Ask or Allow.

If you opened the link inside Instagram, Facebook or TikTok, tap the menu and choose Open in Safari. In-app browsers often can’t use the microphone.

Android (Chrome)

  1. Tap the settings icon left of the address, then Permissions › Microphone › Allow.
  2. If Chrome itself is blocked, open Android Settings › Apps › Chrome › Permissions › Microphone and choose “Allow only while using the app”.

Windows and macOS privacy settings

Windows 10/11: open Settings › Privacy & security › Microphone. Turn on “Microphone access” and “Let desktop apps access your microphone”.

macOS: open System Settings › Privacy & Security › Microphone and switch on your browser. You may need to quit and reopen the browser afterwards.

Once it works, try it on the mic test or go straight to the online voice recorder.
